About this Event
Introducing “Doubling Down”
The SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue presents “Doubling Down,” a monthly virtual event series exploring dialogue and democracy as necessary pillars to advancing challenging conversations. At the Centre, we research and apply dialogue best practices for engagement processes, teaching and learning, politics and policy, and around your dining room table. Join us each month to hear what we’ve learned, what we’re thinking about, and the actions institutions can take to strengthen our democracy. Each event will feature one or more speakers from a specific sector to help the series answer: How do we double down on democracy and dialogue in challenging times? And in order to succeed, what actions and skills do we need to emphasize right now?
Whether you know what dialogue is or not, join us to be inspired and learn new methods that can apply to your work.
Doubling Down: Democracy, Dialogue and Innovations in Engaging Civic Education
In 2019, a national poll conducted by the SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for dialogue found that 60% of Canadian’s thought civic education is currently insufficient. In this inaugural session of our Doubling Down virtual event series, we will host a conversation with those leading successful experiments in civic education. Join us to learn about emerging school-based innovations such as Participatory Budgeting, the Canadian Ethics Bowl, and “knowledge-to-action” models championed by City Hive and SFU’s Semester in Dialogue. Engage with our guests to learn more and discuss the core competencies we need to be teaching students to help overcome the challenges of the future and what kinds of education models we can use to motivate young people toward a life-long commitment to civic duty and policy engagement.
