Megaphone is an award-winning social enterprise that provides an economic opportunity and a platform to people experiencing poverty and homelessness in Vancouver and Victoria. Megaphone is a small, but feisty organization that works with 175 marginalized people in British Columbia every year through its magazine, Hope in Shadows community contest, vendor program, Speakers Bureau, and writing workshops. We are committed to empowering people and creating social change in our communities.

- to advocate for solutions at all levels of government and programming that create more just and inclusive communities.
Development and Public Outreach Coordinator
This is a full-time position with Megaphone that oversees fundraising, events, and communications. The Coordinator oversees and implements donor cultivation and stewardship through print, web and social communications, fundraising campaigns and events, and grant and foundation applications. The position is based out of Megaphone’s office in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver and reports to the Executive Director.
Megaphone is currently undergoing a 3-year strategic planning process. We are seeking a candidate who will work with the ED and staff to achieve the organization’s goals, and who will grow into a position of leadership and will champion values-aligned development strategies within the organization.

Megaphone observes a COVID safety plan that requires staff to work the majority of their hours from home, while community transmission remains high.
Fundraising and Development Responsibilities
- Design and lead Megaphone’s seasonal fundraising campaigns, including direct mail, email campaigns, social media, and magazine advertisements
- Organize and lead Megaphone’s public events, such as the Voices of the Street launch, Hope in Shadows launch, and Breakfast Fundraiser
- Work with contract designers, photographers, and videographers to produce compelling promotional materials for campaigns and events
- Process, manage and analyze donations and donor records using Nationbuilder, Facturly, and other software programs
- Issue tax receipts and maintain receipting records, in accordance with CRA regulations
- Manage donor recognition and acknowledgement, and lead the team to find creative ways to thank and retain donors
- Plan, coordinate, and write grant and foundation applications and reports
- Manage current sponsorships and seek new sponsor opportunities
- Support the Executive Director in major donor cultivation and stewardship
Communications and Outreach Responsibilities
- Draft blog posts, press releases, social media posts, emails, fundraising materials, and other digital and print content
- Support the team’s promotional strategies for Megaphone, Voices of the Street, Hope in Shadows and the Speakers Bureau
- Coordinate media releases and press events, and respond to media enquiries
- Work with the Executive Director to implement marketing and communications strategies to raise Megaphone’s profile, expand the customer base, reach new supporters, and engage existing supporters
- Manage updates to Megaphone’s website, email lists, and social media platforms and grow our online community
Administrative Responsibilities
- Develop realistic budgets for fundraising events and campaigns and manage projects within those budgets
- Provide monthly donation and transaction reports to bookkeepers
- Update best practices and policy documents as needed
- Identify and lead improvements to fundraising and communications systems and practices
- Recruit volunteers as needed
- Coordinate with staff and contractors to manage project workflows
- Maintain fundraising and event records and statistics
Organizational Responsibilities
- Attend regular staff meetings
- Represent Megaphone at public events
- Voice development and communications needs at organizational meetings
- Support Vendor Hub operations
- Participate in organizational strategic planning
Necessary Qualifications
- Direct experience working with people who are homeless and/or low-income, and/or experience working with marginalized populations
- Compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental approach to working with people experiencing multiple barriers
- Outgoing, confident, and enthusiastic
- Motivated self-starter
- Creative problem-solver
- Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong competency with computers, including MS Office (Excel, Word) and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
- Ability to regularly lift and carry 25-50 lb (10-25 kilos)
Ideal Qualifications
- Fundraising or fund development experience in a non-profit context
- Communications and public outreach experience
- Non profit administration experience
- Conflict de-escalation training or experience
- Experience using database software (we use Nationbuilder and Salesforce)
- Access to own laptop computer
- A valid full Class 5 driver’s license

Salary: $45,000-$49,000 commensurate with experience
